Akame Ga Kill!

Akame Ga Kill! (literally meaning "Red-Eye Kill!") is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series of the same name written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. The anime adaptation was announced in January 2014 and was directed by Tomoki Kobayashi. The series was written by Makoto Uezu, with music composed by Taku Iwasaki. Akame Ga Kill! premiered on the Tokyo MX, MBS and Nippon BS Broadcasting television stations on July 6, 2014.^[2]

The series was licensed by Sentai Filmworks in North America and the English dub premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block from August 8, 2015 to February 20, 2016.^[3]^[1]^[4] The series was rated TV-MA on Adult Swim.

Plot[]

The story focuses on Tatsumi, a young villager who travels to the Capital to raise money for his home only to discover a strong corruption in the area. The assassin group Night Raid recruits the young man to help them in their fight against the Empire to end its corruption. The series adapts the first eight volumes of the manga series as well as parts of the tenth and eleventh volumes, while the last five episodes consist of a self-contained story arc.

Characters[]

Night Raid[]

The main protagonists, Night Raid is a team of assassins assembled to assist the Revolutionary Army's efforts to overthrow the corrupt Prime Minister Honest and restore peace and order to the Empire.

Tatsumi — Tatsumi is the main protagonist of Akame Ga Kill!. A young fighter who had set out along with two childhood friends to make a name for himself and earn money for his village, Tatsumi is a kindhearted person who wants everyone to live happily, but has no problem with becoming violent if his friends or his ideals are threatened. After learning of the corruption and evil of The Empire and witnessing the deaths of his friends, Tatsumi was invited to join Night Raid, a group of assassins that are affiliated with the Revolutionary Army currently at war with the Empire.

Akame — Akame, also known as Akame of the Demon Sword Murasame, is one of the members of the assassination group, Night Raid and one of the main protagonists, along with Tatsumi. Akame appears to be a very serious and coldhearted person which stems from her hellish training that the Empire forced her and her sister through, but it is eventually revealed that she is just socially awkward. She cares about her comrades very much and she is always worried that one of them may not make it out alive. Akame is usually in charge of cooking the base's meals.

Leone — Leone is one of the older members of the assassination group Night Raid. She excels at gathering information and exercising calm judgment when necessary. Leone is often the one who's seen confirming the validity of the targets in which Night Raid is assigned to assassinate. She has a very relaxed, upbeat, and cheerful personality, and tends to display a lack of ladylike manners, often seen shoving Tatsumi into her breasts, putting her feet on the table, or consuming large amounts of sake. She serves as a sort of big sister figure to Tatsumi and younger members in Night Raid, often referring to herself as "onee-san" ("Older Sister").

Mine — Mine is a self pro-claimed "Genius Sniper", as well as being a sharp-tongued and quick-witted member of the assassin's group, Night Raid. She is often quick to anger, and easily irritated with those that she does not know well. She has a tendency to tease Tatsumi, due to him being the newest member. Despite her cold exterior, she has shown to be warm and kind to those she has opened up to.

Sheele — Sheele is a member of the assassins' group Night Raid and the user of the Teigu Extase. She is an airhead, often losing her glasses or failing at any chores she attempts due to clumsiness, however she is very kind and caring to her friends, willing to sacrifice her life for them. However, her attitude changes completely when she kills, becoming cold and impassive; she describes it as having "a screw loose" in her mind, which makes her a talented killer. She believes that getting rid of the "society's trash" is the only thing she can do well, and therefore cannot be considered useless.

Bulat — Bulat, also known as 100 Man-Slayer Bulat, is a member of the assassin's group, Night Raid. He has a calm, kind personality; although he refers to himself as passionate and hot-blooded, he never actually loses his cool in battle. He is among the most compassionate members of the Night Raid and teaches Tatsumi to embrace these emotions but not to let them consume him.

Lubbock — Lubbock is a member of the assassin group Night Raid. In The Empire's Capital, his cover is as an owner of a bookstore. Lubbock is an easy going person who tends to be a pervert from time to time, including trying to peep on Leone while bathing. Despite this, he is careful not to let this get in the way of battle when fighting females. His playful and optimistic nature shows even during fights, and he often teases his enemies and brags about his abilities. However he is not too arrogant as he is always ready to flee if he has too much of a disadvantage in battle.

Najenda — Najenda is the head of the assassin group Night Raid. Najenda is taciturn, sharp-minded and level-headed, she leads the group with a surprisingly gentle, but firm air. Her years of experience serving in the Empire as a general have made her a highly capable leader. Najenda is sometimes mistaken as a man due to her boyish appearance, even sometimes being nicknamed 'The Hunk of the Rebellion" by her cohorts. She tends to have a habit of telling "cold jokes" and making bad puns.

The series was broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX, MBS and BS11 television stations from July 6, 2014 to December 14, 2014.^[2] In North America, Crunchyroll streamed the series with English subtitles.^[5] The series' English dub aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block from August 8, 2015^[1] to February 20, 2016.

Akame Ga Kill! premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block on August 8, 2015 at 12:30 AM, replacing Kill la Kill.^[3]^[1]^[4] The series' final episode made its Toonami premiere on February 20, 2016. It was subsequently replaced in the lineup the following week by Dimension W.^[6]
