Made in Abyss is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi. The anime adaptation was produced by Kinema Citrus and directed by Masayuki Kojima. It aired in Japan from July 7, 2017 to September 29, 2017 on AT-X, Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, TVQ, Saga TV, and BS11.[5] A second season titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun premiered in Japan from July 6, 2022 to September 28, 2022.[6]

The series was licensed by Sentai Filmworks in North America and streamed with English subtitles on Amazon's Anime Strike service. The English dub of the first season premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block from January 15, 2022 to April 9, 2022.[1][2] Reruns of the first season returned to Toonami from August 13, 2022 to October 22, 2022.[3] After a Halloween marathon on October 29th, the second season made its Toonami premiere from November 5, 2022 to February 11, 2023.[7][4]

Plot[]

An orphaned girl named Riko lives in the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth. The town surrounds a strange, giant hole descending deep into the earth, which is known as the Abyss. The Abyss harbors artifacts and remnants of civilizations long gone, and is therefore a popular hunting spot for "Cave Raiders" who undertake arduous and dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. Returning from the Abyss can be dangerous as "the Curse of the Abyss," a mysterious and potentially fatal ailment, manifests upon ascension. The deeper one goes, the more acute the effects of the curse; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences. Some legendary Cave Raiders earn the title of White Whistles, one of them being Riko's mother, Lyza, who is presumed dead after taking a "last descent" into the Abyss.

Riko's longing in life is to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a White Whistle. One day, she discovers a robot resembling a human boy in the second layer of the Abyss and names him Reg. Riko and her friends sneak Reg into Belchero and quickly welcome him into their close-knit group. Some time later, a number of findings are made from the depths of the Abyss, including Lyza’s White Whistle and pages of discoveries and observations she had made, as well as a message presumably for Riko, stating she is waiting at the bottom of the Abyss. Riko, determined to find her mother, bids farewell to her friends and secretly departs into the Abyss with Reg as her companion.

Characters[]

Rico — Riko is a 12-year-old orphan from the town at the edge of the Abyss, Orth. She is the only child of the White Whistle Lyza, the Annihilator. When she was two, her mother began her last dive to the bottom of the Abyss, and since her father, Torka, had died before she was even born, she was left under the care of the Belchero Orphanage. Her dream is to become a White Whistle, a legendary type of Delver, and explore the depths of the Abyss with her group in order to learn its many secrets and find her mother.

Reg — Reg is a robotic being with the appearance of a little boy. His actual age, origins, and even name are unknown because he cannot recall anything about his life before his encounter with Riko. He is named after a dog Riko used to have. Having a seemingly artificial body, Reg might be the only being completely immune to the Curse of the Abyss. Because of this, he is sometimes referred to as "The Treasure of the Deep."
