Housing Complex C is a Japanese horror anime mini-series directed by Yūji Nara, with script and original concept by amphibian, and animated by the animation studio Akatsuki. The series is being produced by Adult Swim with Jason DeMarco serving as Executive producer. Bang Zoom! Entertainment was hired to produce an English dub for the series which premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block at midnight from October 1, 2022 to October 22, 2022.[1][2]
Plot[]
Housing Complex C centers on Kimi, a 9-year-old girl who lives in a small, low-cost housing complex located in the seaside town of Kurosaki where all of the elderly tenants dote on her. After the Koshide family and their 10-year-old daughter Yuri move into the housing complex with a group of foreign workers, horrific incidents begin to occur. These incidents include dead animals and piles of fish being left around the housing complex as well as residents going missing, leaving behind only piles of moss. While the series leaves the culprit of these incidents a mystery until the finale, it is hinted at that Kimi knows more than she lets on and is in some way involved.
However, after most of the tenants have disappeared, it is finally revealed that it is not Kimi who is the culprit but in fact the Koshide family, who worship a Cthulhu-esque god named Kuzululu whom they wish to resurrect. Led by Seichi, the family begins to murder the remaining tenants of Housing Complex C as sacrifices to Kuzululu, intending to do the same to Kimi, who runs to the hidden chamber in the store room to escape. Yuri, who is revealed to be a knowing participant in her father's fanaticism, follows her and attempts to kill Kimi. However, Kimi reveals herself to be a living god (Iyoyoloki Soyohosu) that easily kills the entire Koshide family. She then lifts her illusion covering Kurosaki, returning it to the present with only Kan remaining alive.
The series seemingly takes place in August of 2000; however, it is later revealed that the year is actually 2021, and the residents of Kurosaki have been manipulated by Kimi's power into reliving the year 2000 twenty times, with all evidence of the actual year from outside Kurosaki being collected and stored in the store room of the housing complex so that no one discovers the truth.
Characters[]
Kimi Shirokado — A happy go lucky 9-year-old girl who resides within the complex. Her parents are never seen and she appears to live alone with the other elderly tenants looking out for her. She does however "speak" to her mother in her apartment but the mother is later revealed to be an organism in a jar. It is revealed in the finale that Kimi is the god Iyoyoloki Soyohosu and that the god Kuzululu is actually her progeny and a lesser god. Additionally, she reveals that she has been having the residents of housing complex C relive the year 2000 for the past twenty years. Further stating that she has been testing the people of Earth for the past 20,000 years to see if they were worthy of eternity. However, after the past 20,000 years and the events that have transpired at the housing complex she clearly sees that they are indeed not worthy.
Yuri Koshide — A mild-mannered bespectacled 10-year-old girl who moves into the complex with her parents. She is unexcited to be moving from Tokyo to the countryside but soon befriends her new neighbor Kimi. She eventually feels genuine compassion for Kimi and tries to keep her safe, thinking of Kimi as her little sister. In the finale it is revealed that Yuri was acting the entire time and is in fact a fanatical follower of the Cthulhu-esque god named Kuzululu, like her father. She tries to kill Kimi but is easily killed herself when Kimi reveals herself to be a god.
Seichi Koshide — Yuri's father who moves into the complex with his family, his job is to connect large companies with foreign technical interns. His current assignment has brought him to Kurosaki as a supervisor and consultant for the foreign workers who have arrived to work at Tsurie fisheries. In the finale it is revealed that Seichi is a fanatical follower of the Cthulhu-esque god named Kuzululu. He and his family have been performing the horrific incidents around the housing complex and killing the residents as human sacrifices for his god.
Keiko Koshide — Yuri's mother who moves into the complex with her family. She helps her husband take care of matters pertaining to the foreign tenants of the housing complex. In the finale it is revealed that Keiko is a fanatical follower of the Cthulhu-esque god named Kuzululu. She and her family have been performing the horrific incidents around the housing complex and killing the residents as human sacrifices for their god.
Takashi "Taka" Takamura — One of the elderly tenants of the housing complex, he is often seen with Koba and Yoshiken. He is also a professor and has a deep knowledge and fascination with the history of Kurosaki. Of the elderly tenants of the complex, he appears to be the most accepting of the new foreign tenants. He disappears at the end of episode 3 and Kimi has a vision of his lifeless body hanging in the hidden room they discover in the store room. It is revealed in the finale that he discovered the truth and decided to kill himself rather than continue living the fake life created for him by a god. Like all the elderly tenants, he shows affection for Kimi and dotes on her constantly.
Kisou "Koba" Kobayashi — One of the elderly tenants of the housing complex, he is often seen with Taka and Yoshiken. Koba appears to have been some kind of handyman or tinkerer, as in episode 1 he says he has fixed everything from appliances to warships. He has a wife that now lives in a rest home apart from him. In the finale he discovers the truth and decides to protect Kimi despite understanding that she is a "monster god". However, before he can protect her he is stabbed in the back by Seichi Koshide. Like all the elderly tenants, he shows affection for Kimi and dotes on her constantly.
Kentaro "Yoshiken" Yoshii — One of the elderly tenants of the housing complex, he is often seen with Taka and Koba. It is said by Koba in episode 1 that he is nearly 80 years old. He is a retired security guard that also served in the military. He acts as a night watchman for the housing complex and goes missing at the end of episode 2, along with his wife, leaving only mossy piles behind. Like all the elderly tenants, he shows affection for Kimi and dotes on her constantly.
Mitsuko "Momo" Momochi — A friendly middle-aged woman and mother of Hideo. She has a somewhat strained relationship with her son due to him being a hikikomori. Like all the elderly tenants, she shows affection for Kimi and dotes on her constantly. She disappears at the end of the first episode along with Hideo.
Hideo Momochi — A hikikomori who lives with his mother and draws constantly. He has been going into the store room and covering the walls with his weird drawings. He disappears at the end of the first episode leaving behind an inexplicable pile of moss in the shape of his body.
Toshi Wada — The cantankerous elderly building manager of the housing complex. She is initially prejudiced towards the Middle Eastern interns due to them being foreign and feels they are disrespecting the housing complex with their "weird" practices. However, she changes her views on them after piles of fish are found around the housing complex, which she identifies as a "rebirth ritual", and begins treating them kindly. In the finale she is murdered by Keiko Koshide. Like all the elderly tenants, she shows affection for Kimi and dotes on her constantly.
Kanchan "Kan" Mia — One of the Middle Eastern interns under Mr. Koshide who works at Tsurie fisheries, a large muscular man who seems protective of Kimi from their first meeting. Rubel says that Kan is easily manipulated and could be tricked into admitting to an act he did not commit. He is also shown to have an unnatural fascination with the local moss, as he's seen marveling at it on several occasions. In the finale he receives a letter from Kimi giving him instructions on what to do if something bad happens. When the Koshide family begins murdering the remaining tenants of housing complex C, Seichi and Keiko both attempt to kill him. However, he is able to fend them off with his abnormal strength. Although he is severely wounded he is the lone survivor of the ordeal after Kimi has released her illusion that covered the island.
Rubel Hossen — One of the Middle Eastern interns under Mr. Koshide who works at Tsurie fisheries. He represents the group as their mouthpiece because he is the most fluent in Japanese. However, as tensions between his group and the residents worsen, he ends up leaving the housing complex.
