Pop Team Epic is an anime adaptation of the 4-panel digital manga series of the same name created by Bkub Okawa. The series was announced on April 2, 2017 and features animation by Kamikaze Douga with production by King Records. The series, directed by Jun Aoki and Aoi Umeki, aired on Tokyo MX1 and BS11 between January 7, 2018 and March 25, 2018, following a delay from October 2017 due to an "error by King Records".[3]
Sentai Filmworks licensed the series in North America, and the series was simulcast on HIDIVE, Crunchyroll and Funimation. However, Funimation also released a simuldub in English-speaking territories as it aired.[4] The series aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block from June 30, 2018 to September 22, 2018.[1] The series also returned to Toonami for a second run from November 10, 2018 to February 9, 2019.[2][5] The series is rated TV-14-DLV and TV-MA on Adult Swim.
Plot[]
The series chronicles the misadventures of two profane 14-year-old girls named Popuko and Pipimi, who encounter a variety of both mundane and bizarre situations and respond to them in equally bizarre and/or exaggerated ways. The series frequently parodies pop culture and uses a combination of surrealism, absurdity, and non-sequiturs.
Taking after its source material, the anime takes the form of an animated skit show, featuring numerous, typically disjointed shorts of varying lengths; while some of these shorts are adapted from the original comic strips, the majority of them are original creations. The various shorts collectively showcase a variety of animation styles, most often CGI, professional-looking 2D animation, and idiosyncratic animation. Each half-hour episode features two near-identical 15-minute segments, each containing different voice actors and other subtle differences.
Characters[]
Popuko — One of the two protagonists of the series. A quick-tempered, short, orange-haired school girl that is friends with Pipimi.
