After rumors of a man calling himself Hitokiri Battousai terrorizing the citizens of Tokyo begin to spread, Kaoru Kamiya, the owner of a small dojo, takes it upon herself to catch him. After confronting a swordsman with a cross-shaped scar but dismissing him as a simple wanderer, she takes him into her family's dojo. After a confrontation, the wanderer defeats the man posing as the Battousai and after some prompting reveals his real name to be Kenshin Himura, as well as his identity as the true Battousai, once a well-known and well-feared hitokiri during the Bakumatsu.
2 "Kid Samurai: A Big Ordeal and a New Student" January 17, 1996 March 18, 2003
After nearly being victimized by a young pickpocket, Yahiko Myojin, Kenshin takes sympathy on the boy who declares himself to be from a samurai family. After his mother's death, Yahiko has been forced into working for the yakuza to pay off his deceased mother's debt. When Kaoru goes to rescue the boy she finds herself in a perilous situation until Kenshin appears and defeats the yakuza single-handedly. Kaoru then takes Yahiko as her student, at Kenshin's prompting, despite the reluctance of both of them.
3 "Swordsman of Sorrow: The Man Who Slays His Past" January 24, 1996 March 19, 2003
Yahiko is discontent with the teachings of Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, wanting to defeat his enemies over protecting the innocent. After defeating corrupt policemen, Kenshin is greeted by an old acquaintance from the military that invites him to re-join the military and become a high-ranking officer.
4 "Bad! Introducing Sanosuke, Fighter-for-hire" January 31, 1996 March 20, 2003[1]
Gohei Hiruma, the man who Kenshin had previously defeated in the first episode, hires Sanosuke Sagara, known as Zanza after his signature zanbatou, to take Kenshin down. He accepts, but not for the money. Instead, he plans to acquaint himself with his new opponent.
5 "The Reverse-blade Sword vs. the Zanbatou: Beyond the Battle" February 7, 1996 March 21, 2003[1]
Zanza returns to fight Kenshin, and reveals his reason for fighting and his past with the Sekihoutai, where his captain and teammates were used as scapegoats by the government.
6 "The Appearance of Kurogasa: Visitor from the Shadows" February 14, 1996 March 24, 2003[1]
Government officials are being murdered and Jinei Udoh, a former hitokiri known for his ruthless attitude, is the culprit. The government asks Kenshin to stop him but when Jinei sees Kenshin, he realizes he has a worthy opponent and kidnaps Kaoru, telling Kenshin to meet him later.
7 "Deathmatch under the Moon! Protect the One You Love" February 21, 1996 March 25, 2003[1]
Jinei has kidnapped Kaoru in order to force Kenshin back into his murderous ways. When he uses a paralysis technique on Kaoru to stop her breathing, will Kenshin once again become Battousi the Man Slayer and take Jinei's life.
8 "A New Battle! The Mysterious Beauty From Nowhere" February 28, 1996 March 26, 2003[1]
One of Sanosuke's friends has died from an opium overdose and a mysterious woman named Megumi Takani shows up and asks for his help, to which Kenshin tags along. She is being pursued by the Oniwabanshū, an elite group of ninja that used to protect the Edo castle.
9 "The Strongest Group of Ninjas: The Horrible Oniwaban Group" March 6, 1996 March 27, 2003[1]
Yahiko has been poisoned and is treated by Megumi, who reveals herself to be a medical expert. After telling the story of how she became involved with Kanryū, she is kidnapped by one of Kanryū's underlings.
10 "Aoshi: Someone so Beautiful it's Frightening" March 13, 1996 March 28, 2003[1]
The group goes to retrieve Megumi, but the Oniwabanshū stands in their way. Kenshin narrowly defeats Han'nya, and then he, along with Sanosuke, confronts commander Aoshi Shinomori. Aoshi takes out Sanosuke with one blow, urging Kenshin to begin their battle.
11 "Farewell, the Strongest Men: The Clash Between Light and Shadow" April 24, 1996 March 31, 2003[1]
Kenshin narrowly defeats Aoshi, but Aoshi asks Kenshin to finish him off, and when Kenshin refuses, Aoshi vows revenge. Kanryū shows up with a gatling gun and kills the four members of the Oniwabanshū, who die defending Aoshi. Megumi tries to kill herself for her past misdeeds, but they save her just in time. Aoshi buries his comrades and swears that he will defeat Kenshin for their sake.
12 "Birth of a Boy Swordsman: The Battle of First Apprentice Yahiko" May, 1996 April 2, 2003[1]
Yahiko meets a cute girl named Tsubame Sanjō, who works at the Akabeko restaurant under Tae Sekihara. She is being forced into making a copy of the key to the Akabeko restaurant by a group of thugs, and Yahiko decides to help her by himself.
13 "Strive for the Grand Championship: Toramaru's Sumo Battle Log!" May 8, 1996 April 3, 2003[1]
Kaoru takes in Toramaru, a sumo wrestler who has been kicked out of his sumo stable. The leading wrestler fears being overtaken, and uses his status to keep Toramaru down, so Kaoru teaches Toramaru to be more self confident.
14 "Save a Small Life: The Challenge of the Beautiful Doctor, Megumi" May 15, 1996 April 4, 2004[1]
Megumi treats a girl with a life threatening heart condition, but a faith healer enters town and begins to seeminly perform miracles to cure the sick at exorbitant sums, while spreading rumors that Megumi is a quack. When the young girl is put in a life threatening situation because of her parents' desperation, Kenshin and Sanosuke rush to save her before it is too late.
15 "Assassination Group of Fire: Jinpuu Squad on the Run" May 22, 1996 -
The Jinpuu squad is performing vigilante assassinations. They try and force Sasaki, a local schoolteacher, to pick up his sword again, but Sano and Kenshin fight them off. Toma, the Jinpuu leader, vows to kill Kenshin.
16 "A Promise From the Heart: The Secret Technique of the Shiden Renga Blade" June 5, 1996 April 7, 2003
Sasaki decides to become a swordsman once again to protect the children, but Sano doesn't allow him to. Sano enlists the help of Kenshin to stop Toma, the former student of Sasaki, and the assassin member trying to force Sasaki to join the assassin group. Toma is trying to assassinate Yamagata Aritomo, a high-ranking official in the government, who is also Kenshin's friend.
17 '"Fly to Your Dreams: The Adventures of Marimo, The Human Bullet" June 12, 1996 April 8, 2003
The group goes to the circus and Yahiko takes a liking to the "Human Bullet" girl Marimo. A circus boss tries to sabotage the show and make Marimo work for him, but Kenshin, Kaoru, and Sanosuke entertain the crowd until Marimo can find the right mix of gunpowder and fly from the cannon.
18 "Run, Yahiko: Get the Reverse-blade Sword Back" June 19, 1996 April 9, 2003[2]
Gohei Hiruma returns and hires the Onizaki brothers to kill Kenshin. Gohei tricks Yahiko into bringing him the reverse blade sword, and then ties Yahiko up. Kenshin is outmatched by the Onizaki brothers, but Yahiko escapes and brings the sword to Kenshin, allowing him to win.
19 "Raijuta's Ambition: Dream of a Forbidden Kingdom" June 26, 1996 April 10, 2003[3]
The group goes on vacation in Izu. There, a wealthy boy Yutaro Tsukayama falls under the influence of Raijuta, who intends to create a kingdom with his warriors.
20 "Revival of the Shinko Style: The Technique Which Heralds a Storm" July 10, 1996 April 11, 2003
Kenshin leaves Raijuta's warriors to save Yutaro from drowning. Kaoru teaches Yutaro the swordsmanship of the Kasshin-ryū, although he doesn't understand its moral aspects. The military attacks Raijuta and his gang.
21 "The Dissolution of a Nightmare: Raijuta's Ambition Concludes" July 17, 1996 April 14, 2003[4]
Kenshin stops the battle by challenging Raijuta to a one on one battle. He figures out the trick to Raijuta's vacuum cut, and defeats him. Yutaro is injured in the battle, and decides to move to Germany for better medical care.

The group takes a train trip to Yokohama for fun. A train robbery ensues in efforts of stealing gold coins from a nobleman.
23 "Sanosuke's Betrayal: The Fateful Reunion" August 14, 1996 April 16, 2003[4]
Sanosuke goes to a picture shop to buy a picture for Tae at the Akabeko restaurant. While at the picture shop, he stumbles across a portrait of Captain Sagara, drawn by Tsunan Tsukioka, another surviving member of the Sekihoutai. Sanosuke joins with Tsunan and defeats Tashiwachi Shindo, the man who framed Captain Sagara ten years earlier.
24 "Midnight Battle: Sanosuke Versus Kenshin Revisited" August 21, 1996 April 17, 2003[4]
Sanosuke throws a party at the dojo for everyone. Little does everyone except Kenshin know, Sanosuke is really planning to leave the group for good to revive the long lost Sekihoutai with his friend Tsunan.
25 "The Crimson Pirate: Kenshin and Kaoru Separated" August 28, 1996 April 18, 2003[4]
Kaoru goes on a boat cruise to get some money. Miraculously, Kenshin, Yahiko, and Sanosuke find the same boat cruise and get on it, not knowing that Kaoru is also onboard. Kenshin eventually finds out, and then the Kairyu, fearsome pirates who fight like demons, attack the boat. Kenshin, poisoned, defeats Shura, the leader of the Kairyu. As the pirates retreat, they capture Kaoru. Kenshin exchanges himself for Kaoru and is taken by the Kairyu, leaving Kaoru, Yahiko, and Sanosuke behind.
26 "Lightning Incarnate: The Noble and Mysterious Female Pirate, Shura" September 4, 1996 April 21, 2003[4]
Shura and the Kairyu land at Kairyu Island with Kenshin. Shura does not have the heart to kill Kenshin, and so Ginjo, a greedy member of the Kairyu, makes up a plan to kill Shura and become leader in her place.
27 "Burn, Island of Terror: The Crimson Pirate Chapter Concludes" October 16, 1996 April 22, 2003[4]
Kenshin and Sarujiro help to nurse Shura back to health, then Shura finds out that Ginjo gave Iwazo some opium. Shura goes off to fight and defeat Ginjo, but she is defeated after he plays a dirty trick on her. Kenshin then comes in and ends the fight. Geki then throws a bomb, destroying Kairyu Island and all its inhabitants, except for Kenshin and Shura.

Within the recesses of his heart, the dark past echoes again to Kenshin in his sleep. As the nightly storm brings him back to a cold night in the city of Kyoto nearly a decade ago, when the streets ran red with blood and the air pervaded thickly with fighting spirit, his soul which yearns for peace cannot discern nor pin down what these flashbacks truly mean. However, these visions are not wrong. A premonition of things to come, the major figure around whom these dreams revolve has eyed his prey from the shadows of Tokyo's streets since his arrival, and is ready to ruthlessly strike. The man known as the Wolf of Mibu, now again seeks out Himura Battosai!

After the recent incident at the Kamiya Dojo, unease airs over the coming days. Sanosuke is beginning to recover from the wounds inflicted by Saitō, but Kenshin's mind is greatly disturbed. Knowing that out there, his nemesis lurks about and eyes his every move, Kenshin knows now that he must bring his steel to the forefront. As if heaven watches onto the earth below with the clouds overcast, and with trying times ahead, May 7th, 1878, shall be a dark day for Kenshin to remember!

Under a cloudy dusk, in the darkness of the Kamiya Kasshin dojo, two rivals from one of the bloodiest revolutions in history come to face each other again in the peaceful days of the Meiji. But, as their ferocious and violent duel sees them fight near the razor's edge in an attempt to claim their opponent's life, rushing headlong, someone who can only bring them out of their darkness awaits- And he comes bearing an awful revelation that threatens the fate of all of Japan!
31 "A Wish Unrequited: Kenshin Departs" November 27, 1996 April 29, 2003[4]
As the deadline for Kenshin's decision on whether to go to Kyoto nears, Kaoru becomes anxious at the possibility of his leaving. After Okubo's assassination by Sojiro Seta, Kenshin decides to go to Kyoto and bids an emotional goodbye to Kaoru, implying that it is likely they will never meet again.
32 "Change Tears to Courage: Kaoru Kamiya's Choice" December 4, 1996 April 30, 2003[4]
Kaoru is deeply depressed and distressed since Kenshin left Tokyo. With the help of Yahiko Myōjin, Tae Sekihara, Tsubame Sanjō, and especially Megumi, Kaoru regains her courage and decides to leave Tokyo to go to Kyoto and see Kenshin. Saito also gets into a fight with Sanosuke, telling him not to go to Kyoto. Sanosuke leaves on his own despite Saito's warning that he will be a liability to Kenshin.
33 "For the Title of Strongest: Aoshi's New Conflict" December 11, 1996 May 1, 2003[4]
Aoshi Shinomori has now chosen the path of chaos. He will do anything to defeat Kenshin, as he feels it will prove to the world that the Oniwabanshū were the strongest fighters of the revolution. Aoshi defeats four monks working for Shishio, who were merely meant to test Aoshi's strength, but refuses to join Shishio after Sojiro tries to convince him.
34 "The Girl Bandit: Misao Makimachi's Hidden Side" January 8, 1997 May 2, 2003[4]
Misao Makimachi, the female bandit, whom Kenshin meets in the forest, is a member of the Oniwabanshū. She wants very badly to see Aoshi, though unknowing of his whereabouts, and to see the other four members of the Oniwabanshū, yet unaware of their fate. Misao refuses to stop chasing Kenshin, as she believes that he can lead her to them.
35 "Conquered Village: The Grasp of Shishio's Hands" January 15, 1997 June 17, 2003[5]
Along the way to Kyoto, Kenshin and Misao come across a nearly dead man with his little brother in his arms, Eiji Mishima. The man dies, and Eiji wants to avenge his brother's death by killing Senkaku, the man who slayed his elder brother. Kenshin, Eiji, and Misao travel to Shingetsu Village, Eiji's hometown, and fight some of Shishio's soldiers off. Kenshin and Saito leave Misao and Eiji behind, as they go to Shishio's mansion nearby.
36 "Across the Boundary Between Edo and Meiji: Kenshin and Shishio Face to Face!" January 22, 1997 June 18, 2003[5]
Kenshin and Senkaku fight, and Kenshin wins with ease. Misao and Eiji make their way up to the mansion in an attempt to defeat Senkaku for themselves.
37 "Shock! The Reverse-Blade is Broken: Sojiro's Tenken verses Kenshin" January 29, 1997 June 19, 2003[5]
Shishio is challenged by Kenshin, but Shishio refuses to accept, saying that Kenshin is weak as a wanderer. Shishio tells Sojiro, his right hand man, to fight Kenshin instead, while Shishio and Yumi Komagata leave the mansion. Sojiro and Kenshin both use the battōjutsu drawing technique, in which both swords are severely damaged. Sojiro leaves the mansion, telling Kenshin to get a new sword before they meet again.
38 "Sanosuke's Secret Training: The Challenge of Anji the Destroyer" February 5, 1997 June 20, 2003[5]
Sanosuke gets lost in a forest and finds a monk there that goes by the name of Anji Yūkyūzan, who gives him some food. Sanosuke ends up convincing Anji to teach him how to use a destructive punching technique called the Futae no Kiwami attack, capable of completely pulverize huge boulders into dust. Anji gives Sanosuke one week to learn the technique, lest he be killed.
39 "The Creator of the Reverse-Blade Sword: Shakku Arai's Final Swing" February 12, 1997 June 23, 2003[5]
Kenshin and Misao make it to Kyoto where they meet Nenji Kashiwazaki, code-named Okina, of the Oniwabanshū. Okina knows Kenshin is the legendary Battousai the Manslayer the moment he lays eyes on him. Kenshin goes to see Sekku Arai, who is the son of Shakku Arai, the one who forged the reverse blade sword, in order to replace the broken sword.
40 "A Killer Without Mercy: Fight to the Death Against the Cho of the Juppongatana" February 19, 1997 June 24, 2003[5]
Kenshin finds that Chō has kidnapped Iori in order to obtain the final masterpiece of Shakku for himself. Kenshin is forced to choose between keeping his vow not to kill and saving the baby.
41 "The Ultimate Technique of the Hiten-Mitsurugi Style: Reunion with a Mentor, Seijuro Hiko" February 26, 1997 June 25, 2003[5]
Kenshin finds his master Seijūrō Hiko living as a potter near Kyoto, but Hiko is initially unwilling to take Kenshin back due to his walking out to join the revolution. Yahiko and Kaoru meet Misao in Kyoto after learning that she saw Kenshin leaving, and later leads the grateful pair to him after they meet Okina at an inn disguised as the headquarters of the Oniwabanshū.
42 "The Formation of an Alliance: The Day When Aoshi Joins with Shishio" March 5, 1997 June 26, 2003[5]
Misao is in denial after hearing of the deaths of four other members of the Oniwabanshū, and feels despair as she recalls her country-wide search for Aoshi, which ended without success. Meanwhile, Aoshi sends a letter to Okina and they meet in a market, where the latter will not allow the former to continue as the leader of the Oniwabanshū, due to his demonic desire to kill Kenshin. Sojiro and several other members of the Ten Swords meet Aoshi and convince him to join them, as they share the goal of destroying Kenshin.
43 "Between Life and Death: Master the Ultimate Technique, Amakakeru Ryu no Hikameki!" March 12, 1997 June 27, 2003[5]
Seijūrō reminisces about when he first met Kenshin. While they continue training, Kenshin finally proves himself worthy of learning the final technique, in which Seijūrō begins by teaching and instructing him of the Kuzu-ryūsen attack, a technique which simultaneously deals nine strikes to the fundamental targets of swordsmanship. It is then that Hiko proclaims to Kenshin that he must defeat this technique with the ultimate attack.
44 "A Decisive Battle Like Violent Waters: The Strongest Troop Juppongatana" March 19, 1997 June 30, 2003[5]
The Ten Swords have gathered in the temple of Shishio in Kyoto, and are ready to commence the Kyoto Grand Fire and be on their path to victory.
45 "As if to Fly: Stop the Launch of the Battleship Purgatory!" April 16, 1997 July 1, 2003[5]
Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Saito go to Osaka to find Shishio and his men on board a ship. They find Shishio, and Shishio launches the Purgatory, a steel-plated battleship he paid a fortune to get. Shishio plans to use the Purgatory to launch an assault on Tokyo.
46 "Purgatory Bursts into Flames: The Destiny of Makoto Shishio" April 23, 1997 July 2, 2003[5]
Sanosuke uses the Futae no Kiwami attack Anji taught him to stop gattling gun bullets from hitting him. He then throws the bombs Tsunan Tsukioka gave him, before he left Tokyo, onto the Purgatory, damaging the engine and leaving a hole in the ship. The Purgatory eventually sinks, but not before Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Saito get off safely. Shishio issues a challenge; Kenshin can only defeat him at his base by facing him in a one-on-one fight.
47 "Crash! The Lethal Punch, Futae no Kiwami: The Fist of Sonosuke Screams!" April 30, 1997 July 3, 2003
Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Saito journey to Mount Hiei at the Shrine of the Six Arches to settle the score with Shishio. The first challenger of the Ten Swords in the shrine is Anji the Destroyer, the man who taught Sanosuke the basics of the Futae no Kiwami attack.
48 "Reborn to Salvation: The Beginning of Anji’s New Life" May 14, 1997 July 4, 2003
Sanosuke and Anji continue their duel. Anji is reborn to salvation after talking about his past and being convinced by Sanosuke and the memories from the people of his past that he was doing the wrong thing all these years by being a destroyer. Kenshin and Saito continue on ahead to fight Usui Uonuma, the second challenger of the Jupongottana.
49 "The Wolf Destroys the Eye of the Heart: The Fierce Attack of the Zero Stance Gatotsu" May 28, 1997 July 12, 2003
Usui confronts Saito while the others continue on through Shishio's mansion. Usui's claim to his heart's eye is put to the test by Saito, who observes that it is simply super enhanced hearing adopted by Usui to make up for his lack of sight. Saito realizes that Usui is in fact weak since his desire for revenge against Shishio has driven him to become a mere pawn in Shishio's game. An enraged Usui wounds Saito using the timbe, a tortoise-shell shield, and blocks his vision. However, Usui is no match for Saito's Zeroshiki attack, a move Saito had been saving for a fight against Kenshin.
50 "The Promised Time Has Come: Aoshi and Kenshin Fight Again" June 4, 1997 July 19, 2003
Kenshin senses something coming from the room of Hōji Sadojima, the presence of Aoshi. He enters the room, and is determined to keep his promise to Aoshi, and to Misao, by fighting and bringing Aoshi back to the inn. Upon entering the room, Aoshi greets him, and says that he has thrown everything away, including his four comrades, just for the moment of the duel between him and Kenshin. Aoshi is determined to win the fight and kill the manslayer, to claim the title of the strongest.
51 "Wake Up Now! Ignore Your Wounds and Fight to the Finish" June 11, 1997 July 26, 2003
As the duel between Kenshin and Aoshi continues, Kenshin is being attacked by Aoshi, trying to scold him for who he ought to be. Kenshin is determined to return Aoshi to the affectionate man he once was, allowing him to bring Aoshi back to Misao, thus attempting to keep the promises he made to each of them.
52 "To Make a Miracle: The Battle at the Aoiya" June 18, 1997 August 2, 2003
Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao are to battle against Kamatari Honjō, Henya Kariwa, and Iwanbō. Yahiko manages to defeat Henya, after being almost killed by his Hikku Happa attack. After that, Kamatari, Kaoru, and Misao fight. Misao gets crushed ribs in the fight against Kamatari, and is unable to continue until she wakes up from a dream of Han'nya, and she and Kaoru defeat Kamatari through a combined effort. It seems like they have won, until two other members of the Ten Swords, Elder Saizuchi and Fuji, appear, which, in turn, puts Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao at a major disadvantage.
53 "The Giant Versus Superman: Like an Arrow Shot at a Time of Despair" June 25, 1997 August 16, 2003[6]
Just when all hope seems lost, Seijuro shows up and fights Fuji. He talks to Fuji and make him realize that he was being used and asks for a fair fight and defeats Fuji with the Kuzu-ryūsen attack. The inn is safe from harm, but Kenshin still has to fight Sojiro in order to fight Shishio himself.
54 "Hiten Versus Shukuchi: Sojiro's Inborn Talent" July 2, 1997 August 23, 2003[6]
Kenshin and Sojiro have their second duel, since the one in Shingetsu Village was never finished. Sojiro shows Kenshin his shukuchi technique, one that uses powerful legwork to bring him close to his opponent in an instant. Kenshin is wounded and is incapable of touching Sojiro, even with his Kuzu-ryūsen attack, ironically supposed to be an inescapable attack.
55 "The Tragedy of a Stormy Night: Sojiro's Past" July 9, 1997 August 30, 2003
In a flashback it is shown that Sojiro was treated as a servant by his family, that never showed him any respect or affection. He later meets Shishio, who kindly spared his life. After learning how cruel Sojiro's family is to him, Shishio offers him the Wakizashi sword. When Sojiro is soon cornered by his family, he uses the sword to murder them all. Sojiro follows Shishio, as Shishio tells Sojiro that he will become strong.
56 "A Duel With an Extreme Moment: Shuntensatsu Versus Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki" July 16, 1997 September 6, 2003
After pondering between the philosophies of Shishio's survival of the strong and Kenshin's protection of the weak, Sojiro becomes heavily confused, suddenly breaking down during the fight. Sojiro and Kenshin fight each other at full strength, the Shuntensatsu attack versus the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki attack. Yumi guides Kenshin and Sanosuke to the top of the Inferno Arena. Kenshin thinks about his past, and what awaits him next, the entire way up to where Shishio himself is waiting, with Hōji at his side. Shishio promises that the battle will end in fifteen minutes, giving Yumi a kiss as he walks off. Thus, the fight between the two manslayers begins.
58 "The Age Chooses Shishio? Kenshin's Greatest Crisis" August 13, 1997 September 20, 2003
Shishio doesn't believe that Kenshin understands the laws of nature and philosophizes about the survival of the fittest through chaos and not just a worthless mirage of peace. Shishio then uses the Guren Kaina attack, the second of his Secret Sword technique, giving Kenshin a concussion. Saito suddenly busts through the door, using his Gatotsu First Stance, executing the Ishiki attack. However, Shishio is protected by a metal plate in his forehead. After trying the rest of his Gatotsu stances, Saito soon gets knocked out by Shishio. Even Sanosuke attempts to attack Shishio, but to no avail. It is then that Aoshi appears to engage in combat with Shishio.
59 "Not Out of Luck! The Revival of a Fighting Spirit" August 20, 1997 September 27, 2003
Aoshi struggles to defeat Shishio, even after landing the Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren attack. After much time passes by, Kenshin regains consciousness due to his swordsman spirit, surviving the painful injuries inflicted by Shishio. Just when Shishio is about to finish Kenshin off with another Guren Kaina attack, Kenshin remembers the promise he made to Kaoru to go back to Tokyo together. Kenshin is able to initiate the Kuzu-ryūsen attack of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū battōjutsu. Nonetheless, Shishio gets back up because of his swordsman spirit.
60 "The Man Who is Chosen for Victory: Shishio Versus Kenshin, Finale" September 3, 1997 October 4, 2003[7]
Shishio ignites his sword to finish off Kenshin. After Shishio falls defeated, Yumi begs for Kenshin to spare his life, but she is killed by Shishio in an attempt to kill Kenshin. Shishio is killed by being burned alive and Hōji, refusing to accept Shishio's defeat, maniacally attempts to destroy the Inferno Arena to kill Kenshin, Sanosuke, Saito, and Aoshi.
61 "The Juppongatana Who Remain: A Choice for Life" September 10, 1997 October 11, 2003[7]
Sanosuke and Aoshi drag Kenshin out of the building, eventually escaping the eruption. Saito is left behind due to his overly injured legs not being able to jump the collapsed bridge. The Inferno Arena finally explodes, seemingly killing Saito. Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Aoshi regroup with Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao. Chō also appears to tell the group the aftermath of the Ten Swords. Meanwhile, Shishio, Yumi, and Hōji gather in the underworld and plot an ambush.
62 "Kyoto, the Engraved Memory" September 17, 1997 October 18, 2003
Yahiko visits Mount Hiei, and Sanosuke shows him where the battle with Shishio took place. Meanwhile, Kenshin visits an unknown woman's grave, and places flowers by it. Also at this time, Megumi explains to Kaoru the severity of Kenshin's wounds, and that it is important to keep him from doing anything dangerous again. Finally, the group gets on the train to Tokyo, with Misao waving to them and telling them to visit again. After the train departs Saito is seen saying that he and Kenshin will meet again one day and settle the score that they have. When the gang reaches the road to the dojo, Kaoru extends her hand and welcomes Kenshin home.

Kenshin Himura goes off fishing to put some food on the table. At the river he meets an old man who tells him the legend of the fireflies. At the end it is revealed the old man was telling Kenshin the tragic story of his dead lover, who died waiting for him to return from his long quest to master the sword. He gives Kenshin the message that once in his life, every man meets a woman he will never forget. After hearing his story, Kenshin brings back an iris flower, which he gives to Kaoru Kamiya.
64 "The Birth of Prince Yahiko? An Elegant debut into Society" October 28, 1997
As Kenshin and Kaoru are returning from a play, they witness a foreign prince being attacked by bandits and Kenshin intervenes. During the attack the prince was injured, so Kenshin and Kaoru take them back to the dojo. As it turns out, the prince looks exactly like Yahiko Myojin, so Yahiko is put in his place to attend a banquet. At the banquet the bandits attack yet again, but Kenshin is there to protect Yahiko, along with Sanosuke.
65 "Find the Lost Treasure! The Great Detective Dog Notaro" November 04, 1997
When he finds himself under attack by a gang of masked men deemed the Kenwadan, a politician throws the key to his safe into an alleyway. The Kenwadan frantically pursue a dog that promptly picked up the key into a river. Sanosuke comes across the same dog the next morning while praying at the shrine for better luck at dice, carrying it back to the dojo in the care of Megumi Takani. The dog, which Sanosuke names Notaro, promptly tears the lives of the protagonists apart, eating their food, stealing and burying their possessions, and generally making a nuisance of himself. Unfortunately, since Sanosuke distributes flyers indicating a found dog, it does not take the Kenwadan long to track Notaro down.
66 "Kaoru, Ecstatic! Kenshin's Proposal?" November 11, 1997
Kaoru starts faintly daydreaming about being married to Kenshin after Tae Sekihara explains what an engagement ring symbolizes. Kenshin is distracted with going fishing, coming back with a catfish. Kenshin takes a bite of his share of catfish and finds an engagement ring inside. Tae convinces Kenshin to give Koaru the ring, unbeknownst to what it symbolizes. During the time Sanosuke goes fishing, he sees a man about to commit suicide, coincidentally finding out that the engagement ring originally belonged to the man, who threw it away when he thought his girlfriend was seeing someone else. Sanosuke gets Kenshin and Yahiko to work out a way to get the ring without hurting Kaoru's feelings.
67 "The Gleaming Blade of Legends! The Mystic Swordsman Shougo Amakusa" November 18, 1997
Misao Makimachi reports to the group concerning a murder mystery in Kyoto, strange carvings are engraved on the back of a corpse of a politician. Aoshi Shinomori is approached by another politician seeking protection from a written death threat, only to refuse his request. Misao sends this letter to Okina, who deduces that it is written in either Portuguese or Dutch, and the symbol on the bottom of the letter resembles much of the carvings on the corpse. The assassin ultimately kills the politician and puts Misao in a comatose state. The group goes to Kyoto, finding out that the assassin practices the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū battōjutsu. Kenshin visits Seijuro Hiko, who reveals that the assassin is a Christian swordsman named Shōgo Amakusa, who is capable of defeating the Kuzu-ryūsen attack.
68 "The Medallion of Destiny: The First Meeting of Sanosuke and Sayo" November 25, 1997
Shōgo appears where Chō Sawagejō is protecting yet another politician. He easily defeats Chō, and kills the politician. When the groups goes to visit Chō in a hospital, it is confirmed that Shōgo has surpassed Kenshin in skill. Okina finds out that the three men killed were responsible for persecuting Christians during the Edo dynasty. Sanosuke enters a cavern behind a waterfall and finds a Christian occult gathered in front of Shōgo's younger sister Lady Magdaliao and her childhood friend Shōzo. Sanosuke follows the two outside, and later assaults a band of police officers who were after a medallion in their possession. An agitated Shōzo manages to cause Sanosuke to delve into the waterfall, however she loses hold of the medallion. Kenshin learns about how Shōgo betrayed his uncle to seek revenge for the befallen Christians.
69 "To the Battlefield of Shimabara: The Moment of Decisive Battle" December 02, 1997
As the group explore Shimabara, they are introduced to an ambassador named Sir Elsten, who is acquainted with Kenshin after saving his life a decade ago at the end of the Edo dynasty. Sir Elsten urges to be contacted if a potential riot occurs. Shōgo is unaware that Sanosuke has the medallion, as he and Lady Magdaliao are traveling toward Shimabara. With a crowd of Christians gathered near, Shōgo proves to them that he is deemed the child of God by performing miracles. Kaoru and Yahiko notice that a group of Christian children dropped a medallion after being seen. Kaoru later enters a house outside a cave, only to discover the location of a cathedral. Meanwhile, Kenshin and Sanosuke are in another part of the cave being surrounded by a herd of dogs led by a round man with a dog whistle.
70 "Shock of the Rai Ryu Sen! Kenshin sent into Darkness" December 09, 1997
The round man accidentally breaks his dog whistle when Kenshin fights back, losing control of the dogs. So, in turn, Kenshin ends up saving himself and the round man from the dogs. The round man is confused, since he was told that Kenshin is a demon and has to be killed. The round man chains Kenshin to a tree and goes for Lady Magdaliao. Kaoru confronts Shōgo concerning his purpose for wanting Kenshin dead. Kenshin, broken free of the chains, remains at the tree as Kaoru, Shōgo, Lady Magdaliao, and the round man comes to see him. Shōgo battles against Kenshin to prove his superior strength and speed. Kenshin chooses to execute the Kuzu-ryūsen attack instead of the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki attack, showing mercy to Shōgo. However, Shōgo strikes Kenshin with blindness, as he falls over a cliff into the waters below.
71 "The Conspiracy of Kaiou: Shougo Caught in a Trap" December 16, 1997
Sanosuke has fallen off a crevice inside the cave, and is discovered by Lady Magdaliao. She patches up his bruises back at her home in the hill. The two later have an argument about Shōgo. When Sanosuke reveals that he has lost the medallion Lady Magdaliao locks him inside the room. Meanwhile, Shōgo, plots with Kaiou and Santo, two of his followers, the demise of the Meiji government through the instigation of a civil war, but they are disagreeing over price and methodology. Lady Magdaliao carries a gun and returns to the room where she locked Sanosuke, but he has disappeared to locate the lost medallion. Shōzo interrupts Sanosuke's search for the medallion and engages him in combat. Both of them are weakened by each other's attacks and Kaiou and Santo are given Lady Magdaliao's lost medallion.
72 "Days of Remorse: The Sad Past of Shougo and Sayo" January 06, 1998
Misao tells Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko about the secret between Shōgo and Lady Magdaliao. Shōgo was once able to help cure numerous people due to his study in the field of medicine, however he is unable to cure his dying younger sister. When the two were younger, their parents were killed one after another by nonbelievers. Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao see Santo signalling the formation of an army from his boat. Lady Magdaliao is informed that Kaiou has her medallion, alerting her to search for it in his room. She later realizes that Kaiou plans to betray Shōgo and her. Sanosuke and Shōzo show up, trying to stop Kaiou, only to allow the three of them to be locked into the cage, as an avalanche of boulders plummet over them.
73 "The Sneering Demon: Shouzo and Karyu Scattered in the Explosive Flames" January 13, 1998
Kenshin is caught in a noose by one of Kaiou's underlings, but is quickly able to defeat him. Meanwhile, Shōzo is left buried under a boulder, and it is up to Sanosuke and Lady Magdaliao to help free him, to allow him to report this incident to Shōgo. Sanosuke is to fight another one of Kaiou's underlings, and Sanosuke is easily able to knock him unconscious. However, Lady Magdaliao has hyperventilated due to her illness. Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao arrive to accompany the two out of the cave. After Kenshin figures out that Lady Magdaliao has tuberculosis, Sanosuke scurries over to find Sir Elsten, to treat Lady Magdaliao and for him to learn about the formation of the army. Shōzo later overhears what Kaiou is plotting, tryies to fight him but iss defeated. As a last resort Shōzo throws pipe bombs given by Sanosuke, killing Kaiou.
74 "Sanosuke's Tears: An Eternal Farewell Befalls the Two" January 20, 1998
The army has prepared themselves to fight Shōgo and his Christian martyrs. Meanwhile, Sanosuke continues to try and bring Lady Magdaliao to Sir Elsten and after overcoming many obstacles, he manages to find Sir Elsten with Santo. However, Santo attempts to shoot Sir Elsten for interfering with Kaiou's goals, but Lady Magdaliao jumps in and takes the bullet. Sanosuke pummels Santo to the ground and returns Lady Magdalia's medallion back to her, after which she passes away. Sir Elsten then hurries to get to the holy hill to stop the war. Meanwhile, Kenshin finally arrives and tries to stop the fight, finding Shōgo he tells him he will be stopped if the children are to be forced to sacrifice themselves.
75 "The Last Crusade: Two Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki Clash!" January 27, 1998
Sir Elsten arrives to the military base to stop the attack, while Kenshin negotiates with Shōgo. Kenshin is given one hour to convince Shōgo to surrender, before the military becomes involved. Misao informs Sir Elsten that she will send a smoke signal at the peak of the holy hill, indicating a successful negotiation. As the duel begins, Kenshin empathizes with Shōgo, understanding how he feels. They both eventually use the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki attack, in which Shōgo is defeated in the end. Kenshin regains his sight, and Misao sends the smoke signal, ending the war and announcing Shōgo's surrender.
76 "Bon Voyage: Hope Overcomes the Melancholy Waves" February 3, 1998
Kenshin visits Sir Elsten to find out what will happen to the believers and Sir Elsten is waiting for the decision of the government. An official arrives and tells them that the believers can no longer stay in Japan. This enlightens a thankful Sir Elsten, deciding that the believers can come to Holland. Meanwhile, Sanosuke gives Kaoru a letter and a package concealing Lady Magdaliao's medallion, and she goes to see Shōgo for a brief period. Sanosuke goes to Lady Magdaliao's tombstone and reminisces of his time with her. An angry Shōzo appears to Sanosuke. He explains how he feels guilty for taking Kaiou's life. Shōgo later goes to the tombstone, reading the letter that Lady Magdaliao wrote, as he makes his way toward Holland.
77 "There's a Himura Dojo in Shimonoseki? Another Battousai Appears!" February 10, 1998
While the group are eating at a restaurant, a gang called the Tengu creates a disturbance, in which Yahiko and Misao get involved. Then a man claiming to be the legendary manslayer arrives and scares them away. The group is concerned about lodging since there is no room left. They reluctantly make their way up to the temple of the impostor and notices that there is a dojo managed there. The group unwillingly helps out the impostor, who gives them a place to stay. The Tengu group is getting restless and hires a swordsman to kill the fake Battousai. The swordsman arrives at the dojo, demanding to fight the fake Battousai. Kenshin comes back from shopping and saves the impostor by defeating the swordsman. Kenshin later allows him to keep the name of the legendary manslayer, and the group sets sail to go back home.
78 "The Artist's Crush: A Romantic Spree at the Hakone Hot Spring" February 17, 1998
The group walks through the forest and ends up eating at a resort. However, Kenshin realizes he has lost Kaoru's travelling money. Unable to pay the check, the group offers to work off the money. Later that night, Kaoru and Misao go into the hot springs, but they spot an artist and mistake him for a voyeur. They realize he is an artist seeking inspiration, and the artist begs Kaoru to be his model for his next painting. Unaware that she is already in love with Kenshin, the artist falls in love with Kaoru. Misao and Sanosuke tell the artist that if he can hit Kenshin, Sanosuke will try to bring the artist and Kaoru together. No matter how hard the artist tries he cannot hit Kenshin. After seeing that Kaoru's love for Kenshin is the source of her beauty, the artist gets his inspiration and draws a portrait of Kaoru. As Kaoru shows the others the drawing, they run away in laughter due to the drawing's abstract nature.
79 "Kaishu-Katsu and Kenshin: The Destiny of Two Men who Survived the Revolution" February 24, 1998
A man named Daigoro is talking about people being able to go to the moon, but he receives sarcastic remarks from others. As he leaves with his teacher named Kaishu Katsu, the two are soon ambushed by unknown assassins. The group manages to protect them, until another student named Tetsuma appears and frightens them away. Kaishu exiles Daigoro from the Katsu dojo due to poor swordsmanship so Kaoru vows to teach him the skills and techniques of the sword. Kaishu's daughter, named Itsuko, as well as Tetsuma, go to the Kamita dojo, trying to bring Daigoro back but Daigoro refuses to leave, and Itsuko later decides to reside at the dojo.
80 "The Unending Revolution: A Destiny Forced Upon Kaishu" March 3, 1998
When Kenshin prepares to depart, the group of assassins return, revealing themselves as the Beni Aoi, a group of which Kenshin has no knowledge. He comes back to the Kamiya dojo to tell the others that Daigoro and Itsuko can continue to stay, although it is hinted that Kaishu misses both of them. It is revealed that Kaishu was accused of giving financial aid to an army for a war during the Edo period. Itsuko goes out to buy some ingredients for the dinner recipe, and the Beni Aoi follow Itsuko and kidnap her. Kenshin later finds Itsuko's hairpin on the ground outside, and Kaishu receives a letter about the abduction.
81 "Conspiracy of the Beni-aoi: The Living Ghost of the Revolution Targets Kaishu!" March 10, 1998
Kenshin pays Kaishu a visit, finding out that he was hiding a sum of money from the government, and that the Beni Aoi is in search of it. Kaishu is told to arrive at a temple late at night, and his daughter will not be harmed if he chooses to cooperate. Kenshin was told not to come, but he involves everyone else including Daigoro. Daigoro sees Itsuko attempting to escape and trip to the ground, Daigoro charges forward and is stabbed.
82 "Kaishu-Katsu's Determination: The Truth that Lived Through the Times" April 14, 1998
After Daigoro was stabbed, Kenshin steps forward to fight the leader while the others take care of the rest. The leader is defeated and shortly the police arrive and arrest the Beni Aoi. Kaishu catches Tetsuma red-handed, searching for a map to the hidden money. Tetsuma tries to reason with Kaishu, only to resort to violence. Kenshin intervenes and fights Tetsuma, sword to sword. However, a desperate Tetsuma uses a gun. Daigoro manages to convince him to cease his wrongdoings and turns himself in for repentance.
83 "Yutaro Returns: The Conspiracy of the Shadow Swordsmen" April 21, 1998
Yutaro Tsukayama returns to the dojo with Professor Hans, having a reunion with the group. Meanwhile, the Black Knights are after Professor Hans and want something from him. The group goes to the Akabeko to celebrate Yutaro's return but Kenshin stays behind. The Black Knights attack Professor Hans, taking a map from his possession. They retreat soon after Kenshin steps in to fight. While he was brought back to be treated, Professor Hans tells Yutaro that he has left his notebook and a rock under the porch of the dojo as a clue to the whereabouts of a divine elixir.
84 "The Sanada Ninja Squad and the Elixir: Misanagi's Driving Quest" May 5, 1998
It is found in the notebook that the divine elixir may possibly cure any illness. It is also said that the Black Knights desire the divine elixir in order to acquire world domination. The Sanada Ninjas issue a bargain to join forces with the Black Knights, to have ownership over Japan. The protagonists head to Suwa Shrine at Lake Suwa, the location of the divine elixir. They approach a priest for information regarding the history of the shrine. The Sanada Ninjas attack the group, but retreat and go back to their base when they are bombarded by the Oniwabanshū. The Black Knights tell the Sanada Ninja that they will make their move once the protagonists find the divine elixir.
85 "A Straying Journey: The Trap of the Divine Crossing!" May 19, 1998
While the group travels through the forest, Yahiko becomes dehydrated. A hunter passes by and brings Yahiko into his dwelling to treat him with herbal tea. The hunter tells the group that the divine elixir may be found at a lake deep in the mountains. After the lake parts, the group finally figures out that the divine elixir is hidden inside a dark cave on the other side of a crossing. They encounter many obstacles within the cave. Yutaro uses the rock by placing it on an altar, igniting the cave. However, Misanagi, the leader of the Sanada Ninjas, appear and tells the group that the pathway will lead to the bottom of the abyss, then the floor collapses as they descend toward the base of the cave.
86 "A Heatwave From Beneath the Earth: The Three Sanada Demons!" May 26, 1998
Misanagi and the Black Knights enter the pathway and begin to move toward the divine elixir. Meanwhile, the group is surrounded by sulfur and phosphorus at the bottom of the abyss. Sanosuke must punch through the wall to force a current of water to flow through, allowing the group to espace. Outside the cave, they find Kaita, one of the Sanada Ninjas, who is severely injured. Yutaro is able to treat his wounds and Kaita later helps by showing them a tunnel that will lead them back to the pathway inside the cave. The group is soon ambushed by Zan and Ren, two of the elite members of the Sanada Ninjas.
87 "Schneider's Bet: The Collapse of the Black Nights!" June 2, 1998
Kenshin and Sanosuke continue to fight Zan and Ren while Baku, the third elite member of the Sanada Ninjas, is unnoticed. Sanosuke and Kaoru team up to defeat Zan. Baku distorts Kenshin's senses, making Kenshin vulnerable to Ren's attacks. By attacking the bats, Kenshin manages to defeat both Ren and Baku. Misanagi and the Black Knights find the divine elixir among the vast garden hidden deep inside the cave. Melders reveals that he intended to betray Misanagi from the start, permitting Lentz to attack her. However, Schneider defends Misanagi, only to get badly injured by Melders.
88 "The Two Guides: Yahiko and Yutaro's Eternal Vow" June 9, 1998
Kenshin faces off against Melders, who has the upper hand due to his horse and armor. Melder continues to attack but creates a spark and ignites a flame with the oil on the ground, causing the garden to quickly char. Lentz attempts to get a sample of the divine elixir, only to be interceded by Yahiko and Yutaro. Kenshin uses the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki attack to defeat Melders, but was badly injured in the process. Melders ultimately is lost within the flames, and both Lentz and Schneider survives the demolition. Yutaro is able to retrieve a sample of the divine elixir. Misanagi remains the leader of the Sanada Ninjas, even after making the mistake of temporarily joining forces with the Black Knights. Professor Hans recovers thanks to the divine elixir. He receives a report saying that Lentz and Schneider turned themselves in, and they will be investigated for further information.
89 "To My Angel Misao…Special Delivery from Kyoto" June 16, 1998
After Misao trains with Yahiko in the dojo, she decides to leave . Aoshi Shinomori arrives to escort her back to Kyoto, but she ends up changing her mind. Kaoru and Misao, along with Megumi Takani, go out to shop. Sanosuke and Yahiko become suspicious, believing that the three are going to a restaurant without them, urging them to tag along. Meanwhile at the dojo, Kenshin and Aoshi spend time with each other. The girls run into Tae, along with Tsubame Sanjō at a restaurant. The girls later encounter a pickpocket who steals Tae and Tsubame's money. Misao easily defeats him and returns the money. Kenshin talks to Aoshi regarding his relationship with Misao. The pickpocket comes back with the rest of his gang, but the girls facilely overpower them. Sanosuke and Yahiko are mistaken as criminals responsible for beating up the gang members. Kenshin and Aoishi meet the girls near the riverbank, in which Sanosuke and Yahiko finally catch up to the others.
90 "Feng Shui, Surprise Attack! The Mystery of the Pentagram Spread!" June 23, 1998
The wind and water clans of feng shui compete surrounding a shrine, initially creating a pentagram barrier around the land circa 1602. After 275 years, this magic begins to reactivate and cause disasters in the Tokyo prefecture. After each of these incidents, a man named Reisui claiming to be a water feng shui master appears to provide advice to the victims. However, as soon as the man leaves a mysterious entrepreneur named Saeke turns up to offer his services. When the Akabeko catches fire from one of its stoves, Tae and Tsubame are to lodge at the Kamiya dojo. Saeke takes a visit there, only to be pardoned by Tae. The group is soon attacked by feng shui fledglings, and the wind feng shui master named Jinpu arrives to save them.
91 "The Magic of Feng Shui: Kamiya Dojo is Targeted!" July 21, 1998
Jinpu explains to the group regarding the history between the two clans of feng shui. A map is shown depicting that while the wind clan will set up an Eigou formation that would protect the town, the water clan will set up one that would destroy it. The water clan will construct railroad tracks to the five locations of the warding stones disguised as their Eigou formation. Reisui later attacks the dojo, but retreats after Jinpu retaliates.
92 "Tokyo Under Martial Law! The Deadly Ryu Myaku" August 4, 1998
Kaoru is severely wounded from Reisui's attacks, Jinpu informs that she will be cured after obtaining natural spring water from Musashino. Kenshin and Jinpu head to Musashino to collect the water, while Sanosuke along with Tsunan Tsukioka are to seek and destroy the relics of the shisa, and Yahiko needs to stay behind to protect Kaoru. Meanwhile, the water clan is slowly destroying the wind Eigou formation. Kenshin and Jinpu finally make it into a cave in the mountains while dodging various obstacles of feng shui. Kenshin is able to collect the water and safely escorts Jinpu out of the cave before it collapses. The Ryu Myaku starts to move east of Musashino toward Nikko to follow the path of the Eigou formation.

Kaoru has recovered thanks to the spring water given by Kenshin and Jinpu. The two must leave for Nikko to find the jade crest hidden in the area before the Ryu Myaku gets there first. Sanosuke and Tsunan find a book that gave many useful clues but in a difficult language. They find the author to explain its contents. Clues and hints were being pieced together and the plans of the water clan started to become clearer. Kenshin and Jinpu arrive at Nikko, only to find out that Reisui has the jade crest. Reisui traps the two in a feng shui illusion, but they manage to overcome it. Sanosuke finds Kenshin and Jinpu and explains that the Ryu Myaku has changed their direction toward Senjogahara.
94 "The Elegy of Wind and Water: A Last Desperate Effort!" September 8, 1998
Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Jinpu go to Senjogahara, encountering the water clan. Jinpu attacks Reisui, but the former has proven to be weaker than that of the latter. Meanwhile, the author arrives and tells Tsunan to put the dragon statue in the center of the shrine, hoping it will stop the Ryu Myaku. Jinpu is able to halt and defeat the water clan. After Reisui sacrifices himself, Saeke reveals that it was he that possesses the jade crest, yet he is shortly defeated thereafter, and the jade crest was taken from him by Jinpu. It is then Jinpu who directs the Ryu Myaku toward the shrine, colliding with the dragon statue weakens and stops its feng shui. The police department slowly rebuild their stations and Kenshin bids Jinpu a final farewell.

Kenshin and Kaoru leave on a boat to visit a graveyard. Interspersed are photographs of shrines. In exchange for dinner, Sanosuke assists Megumi with the chopping of firewood. Yahiko is currently working at the Akabeko under Tae with Tsubame. Meanwhile, Kenshin and Kaoru spend the night at a local couple's house because of the rain. Kaoru places her hand on Kenshin's as he sleeps, he briefly awakes and allows it. While asleep, Kaoru has dreams of Kenshin wandering off again. When she wakes early the next day, Kaoru finds Kenshin on the beach and runs into his arms just as day breaks. Kenshin gives Kaoru a seashell and the two return to Tokyo, seeing all their friends at the bridge.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal, known in Japan as Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen, is an OVA series that serves as a prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin anime television series. It was released in Japan in 1999, and was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi and written by Masashi Sogo.

The OVA series is based on chapters 165 to 179 of the Rurouni Kenshin manga written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It chronicles the story of Himura Kenshin as the Hitokiri Battōsai during the years of the Meiji Restoration while also revealing the origins of his famous cross-shaped scar as well as his role as a legendary assassin of the Imperialist cause, and explaining his relationship with a woman named Yukishiro Tomoe, who would become his first wife. Kenshin's fated first encounters with his master, Hiko Seijūrō, and his future rival, Saitō Hajime are also depicted.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal is currently being licensed by Aniplex of America for releases in the English language. Due to the OVA series initially being licensed by the now-defunct ADV Films, it was originally released under the title of Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal in North America. Trust & Betrayal was later collected into a two hour feature-length motion picture with new animated sequences and released theatrically in Japan. In 2003, this feature-length motion picture was eventually released in North America on DVD as a Director's Cut by ADV Films. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal was released on Blu-ray by Aniplex of America on August 24, 2011.

Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection, known as Rurouni Kenshin: Seisōhen in Japan, is the second OVA series of the Rurouni Kenshin anime television series, acting as its sequel. It was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi and written by Reiko Yoshida, and was released in Japan in 2001.

The OVA series is set both during and after the timeline of the television series and tells of Kenshin and Kaoru's later days, much of which is not derived from the Rurouni Kenshin manga. It is mostly told from the point of view of Kamiya Kaoru. The story follows Himura Kenshin as he attempts searching for ways to atone for those who died at his hands, while Kaoru waits for Kenshin to return home. Kenshin's actions, however, alienate him from his estranged son, Kenji.

Reflection was originally released in North America as Samurai X: Reflection while it was being licensed by ADV Films. Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection is now currently licensed by Aniplex of America for English-language releases. Reflection was released in the United States by ADV Films on DVD on March 25, 2003, while a Director's Cut edition was later released. Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection was released on Blu-ray Disc by Aniplex of America on September 21, 2011.
