Saturday Video Entertainment System, often shortened to SVES, is a 7-hour (7:00 PM - 2:00 AM) action-animation programming block that premiered on Cartoon Network on Saturday, March 1, 2003. The block featured former Toonami programming as well as other animated action series that didn't "fit" on Toonami or Adult Swim at the time. The block was created by Cartoon Network’s Williams Street division, the same team that created Toonami, Adult Swim, and Miguzi.
SVES marked Cartoon Network's first prime-time lineup completely devoted to action animation. The packaging (bumpers, intros, promos) of SVES was animated like a video game, with a Samus Aran-like character reminiscent of older arcade game designs. Veteran voice actor Mark Hamill provided the voice over for the block's packaging.
At the time of its premiere many fans considered SVES the death blow for Toonami, as it had similar programming but aired in prime time. However, SVES was short lived and can now be viewed as a trial run for shifting Toonami itself to a Saturday night block. Toonami replaced SVES in the Saturday prime time slot on April 17, 2004.
