Shelter is a 2016 animated short film created by Porter Robinson and produced by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online) and Crunchyroll. The film premiered on Adult Swim'sToonami block on December 31, 2016 at 12:00 AM, before a Dragon Ball Z Kai marathon. The film was announced as the first property to air on the Toonami block with subtitles.[1] However, an edited version was aired, removing the subtitled parts. According to Jason DeMarco, these edits were not planned, and he has stated that a re-airing with subtitles is possible.[2]
Shelter tells the story of Rin, a 17-year-old girl who lives her life inside of a futuristic simulation completely by herself in infinite, beautiful loneliness. Each day, Rin awakens in virtual reality and uses a tablet which controls the simulation to create a new, different, beautiful world for herself. Until one day, everything changes, and Rin comes to learn the true origins behind her life inside a simulation.
