Toonami, also known as Toonami India, was a 24-hour channel in India that launched on February 26, 2015.[3] The channel was initially dedicated to bringing high-octane animated action to kids, superhero fans and their families across the country. However, in 2017, the channel was re-purposed as a classic animation channel, mostly airing shows from Cartoon Network's and Hanna-Barbera's library, while still airing a handful of action-anime series such as Dragon Ball Super.[4] The channel was broadcast in English from its launch until the channel was shut down on May 15, 2018. However, on August 22, 2016, the channel began broadcasting in Hindi each day from 6-8 PM.[5]

Toonami was also formerly a programming block that aired on Cartoon Network in India from 2001 to 2008. For most of its run, the Toonami India block aired three times a day with an early block, an afternoon block, and a late night block. Most of the block's programming consisted of Japanese anime, such as Dragon Ball Z and Cardcaptors, along with a few North American animated series, such as Batman Beyond and Max Steel.

The block premiered as a 1-hour weekend block, that aired twice a day on Saturday and Sunday.[1] In mid-2003, the 1-hour block began airing twice a day on weekdays, at 8 AM and 5 PM.[6] By late 2003, a late night Toonami block had also been added to the weekday Toonami schedule, airing from 10-11 PM.[7] In November 2004, Toonami's late night block began airing at 8 PM.[8]

On November 6, 2006, the block was rebranded "Toonami: Game On." To coincide with the rebrand, a seven city live tour was launched, giving kids an opportunity to personally experience shows featured in the action block. Cities visited during the tour included: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Ludhiana. Viewers could also participate in the on-air contest which gave away prizes each week. Prizes included: Toonami watches, loads of Pokémon goodies, Cybergiants and one Xbox 360 gaming console.[9]
