Toonami (Latin American block) also known as Toonami Latin America, was a programming block that premiered on Cartoon Network in Latin America on December 2, 2002 and was initially cancelled on March 26, 2007. The Toonami block returned to Cartoon Network in Latin America in partnership with Crunchyroll for two years (August 31, 2020 - August 30, 2022), airing Monday through Friday from 12:00 AM to 1:00 AM.[2]A third incarnation of the block will launch soon as part of the new Adult Swim channel launched on October 31, 2023.
History[]
Toonami premiered on Cartoon Network in Latin America on December 2, 2002, replacing a similarly-themed block called "Talisman." Toonami originally aired shows that were already on the Talisman lineup but also premiered several new series such as InuYasha. The block was moved to a late-night time slot on CN Latin America, due to protests of graphic violence on the block, in a similar fashion to the U.S. version. Mexico moved Toonami to midnight in October of 2003, while the rest of Latin America made the move in November of 2004.
In 2005, Toonami had short-lived weekend schedules, which were later replaced by the premiere of Adult Swim in Latin America on October 7, 2005. In March of 2006, Toonami revamped their lineup to include more adult-oriented series. In June 2006, Toonami also premiered several anime movies. In 2007, Cartoon Network cut Toonami completely. After its cancellation in Latin America on March 26, 2007, the action programming of the channel (including both western animation and anime) gradually vanished.
On August 18, 2020, it was revealed that the Toonami programming block would return to Cartoon Network on August 31, 2020 at 12:00 AM, in partnership with Crunchyroll. The 1-hour block would air Monday through Friday. The initial lineup included reruns of Dragon Ball Super (originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2017) and the premiere of Mob Psycho 100.
On October 31, 2020, it was revealed that Doctor Stone would replace Mob Psycho 100 on November 9, 2020. Radiant replaced Dr. Stone on January 25, 2021. The Captain Tsubasa anime series created in 2018 replaced Dragon Ball Super in the midnight time slot on Monday, July 26, 2021. Captain Tsubasa (2018) previously aired on Cartoon Network in Latin America from 2018 to 2019.
After Captain Tsubasa completed its run, the Toonami block began to air reruns of series that previously aired on the block until Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! premiered at midnight on April 1, 2022, replacing Mob Psycho 100. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! was then itself replaced in the lineup by Laid Back Camp on May 5, 2022. After several months of reruns the block was cancelled on August 30, 2022.
In August 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America announced that the block would return as part of Adult Swim's new 24-hour channel, scheduled to premiere on October 31. The new block is broadcast from Monday to Sunday with several repetitions throughout the day.
