Toonami has featured many Japanese and American animated series, as well as several Japanese Original Video Animation (OVA) series, throughout its history. The programming block launched on Cartoon Network on Monday, March 17, 1997 and initially featured predominantly American series (about 75%). However, the block acquired several very successful anime series early on, most notably Dragon Ball Z, which garnered surprisingly strong ratings. This led to Toonami acquiring more anime series, giving it the reputation of being an anime block. However, American series have always had a presence on the block. All of the Japanese anime series that have aired on Toonami were dubbed into English and most have been edited to some degree to meet broadcasting standards. Most notably, the majority of openings and closings of the anime series were shortened or cut completely and replaced with short Toonami intros.
The Cartoon Network block aired for the final time on Saturday, September 20, 2008, and after 4 years off the air, Toonami was revived on Adult Swim on Saturday, May 26, 2012. The Adult Swim version has featured primarily Japanese anime series due to the low supply of good/available American animated series. However, several former Cartoon Network/Adult Swim series have aired on the block and Adult Swim has also begun co-producing their own anime series.
